The Pirate's Cave

The cathedral-arch sea cave below Dhërmi

The Pirate's Cave is the star of our Caves Tour — a tall, cathedral-arch sea cave on the cliffs just south of Dhërmi Beach, big enough that we can take the boat inside.

The cave's defining feature is its entrance: a high, semi-circular arch — roughly 8 metres wide and 10–12 metres tall — topped by a chimney-like skylight where sunlight slips through. Waves carved it out of the limestone over millennia, and inside, light refracting off the water turns the surface a luminous blue-green while the curved walls echo every voice.

Its name comes from Petro Marko's 1955 children's novel Shpella e Piratëve ('The Pirates' Cave') — Marko was born in Dhërmi in 1913, and his book (and its film adaptation) made the cave a household name in Albania. There are actually two adjacent sea caves along this cliff, about 200 and 800 metres from the southern end of Dhërmi Beach.

On a calm day we idle the boat in through the arch, sometimes cutting the engine to drift, with time for a swim in the deep, clear water nearby. If the sea is rough the captain holds at the entrance rather than entering — a safety call we don't push.

Frequently asked questions

Can the boat go inside the Pirate's Cave?

Yes, on calm days. The entrance is a high semi-circular arch roughly 8 m wide and 10–12 m tall, wide enough for our boat. We idle in and sometimes cut the engine to drift. In rough seas the captain stays at the entrance for safety.

Are there really pirates connected to the cave?

The name comes from Petro Marko's 1955 children's novel Shpella e Piratëve ('The Pirates' Cave'); Marko was born in Dhërmi. Albanian sailors of past centuries did use coastal caves as hideouts, but the fame is largely literary.

Is the Pirate's Cave the same as the Blue Cave?

No. The Pirate's Cave is a tall arched cave on the Dhërmi cliffs that you motor into. The Blue Cave is on the Karaburun coast just past Gramma Bay and is known for its glowing blue light — it's on our longer Gramma Bay & Blue Cave Tour.
